Some Random Favorite Links...

Posted by  | Saturday, June 23, 2012  at 7:32 PM
You have probably noticed that the POH authors are taking a little break from writing this summer...  we are all quite busy with our families and summer plans.  We might post every once in a while if we find something that we think might be encouraging to you, but we are not going to try to schedule posts every week.  We hope you are having a wonderful summer and are making lots of special memories with loved ones!

Here are some articles/ links/ recipes I have enjoyed lately:

The "littleness" of motherhood -- another convicting and encouraging article by one of my favorite writers

Chicken Lazone is our absolute favorite recipe right now.  We probably have it at least once every other week.  It is so quick and easy and delicious over a bed of quinoa.  I leave off the seasonings for my girls' chicken so it won't be too spicy for them and their pieces absorb just enough of the spices from ours that it is delicious to them.

A great website for downloading free audio books that I have used greatly in finding stories for my girls for rest time.

This article was very helpful to me in understanding the developmental grasp of a child and helping me to chill out about the way Karlie holds her pencil.

These questions are really fun to ask the kids about any family member.  I printed out the answers on a pretty piece of paper to give to the grandparents for Mother's Day and Father's Day.

Here is an inspiring note to moms of littles.

Natural tick prevention and treatment

My new favorite granola recipe!  She gives a gluten-free option which I now need because my 3-year old needs to eat GF.  I absolutely love the texture and crunch of the toasted buckwheat added to the normal deliciousness of granola!

A great reminder about the "bulk effect" in parenting

We went to The Twisted Fork Restaurant and I fell in love with their Tia Maria Cake -- a friend gave me this recipe that I would really like to try out!

The Long-Term View

Link Love from Meg

We are hoping to get a schedule going and get back to having a topic each month, so please let us know if there is a topic you would like us to cover. But for now, I thought I'd share a few links that I've enjoyed over the past few weeks:

Masking Anger as Justice -- Very good article for parents! Showing anger (or frustration, annoyance, etc) will not produce righteousness in your children . . . even if all your anger is directed at sin. The wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God

What I Would Feed My Family on a Monthly Budget of $250 (for a family of 5) and her next post on how to improve that even more and tips on doing it gluten free, buying from Farmer's market, using a co-op, etc

The Death of Pretty -- Praying that my girls can understand the difference someday...

9 Ways To Cut Food Waste (and save time)

Don't Carpe Diem -- I love her honesty -- parenting is hard work and there are definitely moments I do not enjoy -- but it is ever so worth it!

10 Dumbest Things To Eat -- Such a great list! If you want to make easy changes in your diet, cutting out these ten things would make a HUGE difference!

BPA-Free Buying Guide -- better sources of tomatoes, coconut milk, fish and other food you might need to buy canned

You Never Marry the Right Person -- ‎"Destructive to marriage is the self-fulfillment ethic that assumes marriage and the family are primarily institutions of personal fulfillment, necessary for us to become "whole" and happy..."

"... even if we first marry the right person, just give it a while and he or she will change. For marriage, being [the enormous thing it is] means we are not the same person after we have entered it. The primary challenge of marriage is learning how to love and care for the stranger to whom you find yourself married."

Michael Pollen's Least Favorite Foods -- I'm a big fan of Michael Pollen so this was interesting to me :)

What Every Dad Should Know About His Daughter -- simple article, but true and good to think about

Godly Character Trait Printables -- I want to shrink these down to make into flashcards to incorporate into our homeschooling. And The Character Journal has a great extensive listing of each character trait with related songs, scripture verses, bible stories, projects and more for each character trait!

Stingy Out Gets Stingy In -- "... an example of this would be the mess in your house (I trust that you have one). When I focus on the mess, I am aggravated by the things that do not matter at the expense of the people who do. When I consciously refuse to be upset by the side product, I am free to enjoy the people who are messing it up. Giving my own work freely does not just make me a martyr."

Chick-Fil-A Daddy Date Night -- I'm not big on fast food, but a special night for Daddy and his girls with a princess cow and dancing is a pretty fun idea!

School lunch Ideas

Posted by  | Thursday, September 22, 2011  at 6:30 AM

What are your favorite foods to pack for your kids? Whenever I have a picnic with my girls or have to be out around lunch-time, we usually go the "snacks for lunch" route: some combination of dairy, nut, and fruit. For instance, a lot of times we have cheese, grapes, and almonds or yogurt, apples, and pecans. The girls love it, but I've been excited to find several good articles lately about new ideas for school lunches. I thought I would share the links in case you are stuck in a lunch-time rut like me and eager for some healthy new ideas.

Random links and a Classical Education question

Posted by  | Thursday, July 28, 2011  at 6:30 AM
Hi ladies! We've had a pretty busy week so I thought I'd just share a few links that I've enjoyed lately and ask a quick question:

Summer Fun Idea Jar with Printables-- Do your kids ever get bored during the summer? Here is a great idea for keeping things interesting

Motherhood is a Calling -- one of the most encouraging and challenging articles I've read lately!

Free Printable Chore Cards and Tutorial -- A fun way to keep the little ones on track with their chores each day

Scripture Memory with Toddlers -- some great tips and resources for helping children memorize scripture! (And the comments have some great ideas as well!)

Now for my question:
Have any of you read The Well Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home or The Core: Teaching Your Child the Foundation of Classical Education? I'd love to hear your thoughts. I've been reading them both over the last month and growing more and more excited about the idea of educating my girls classically. I think I am going to learn so much as well! But I must admit, I am also slightly intimidated :) If you've used this method of educating your kids, I'd love to hear about your experience, how it has gone, and if you have any tips for one just starting the journey. Also, I recently learned about Classical Conversations, a national classical Christian community for homeschool families. It sounds like a really neat program, but I don't personally know anyone who has done it and I was curious if any of you have experience with the group. I'd love to hear about it!

Here are a few of my favorite blogs, websites, or articles I have found interesting recently. Please feel free to leave some of your favorite links in our comments section!

Listography --A website just for lists. Seriously.

Catalog Living --This tongue-in-cheek blog cracks me up all the time, and cures me of most of my catalog lust

Cute2Try Hairdos, Cute Girls Hairstyles, Princess Hairstyles --All three of these websites have cute, inventive hairstyles for girls with lots of instructions and pictures

Swagbucks --I use this site to do most of my searching on the internet. Searching earns me "Swagbucks" which I can redeem for various prizes, my favorite being Amazon gift cards. Check it out--it is easy to sign up, and why not earn a few points for something you are already doing?

Money Saving Mom --I find this site to be incredibly helpful not only with the nuts and bolts of saving money (i.e., posts about sales, free offers, etc), but also insightful into the heart of living frugally for the glory of God and the ability to serve and bless others

Southern Savers --a great website for matching coupon savings to grocery/drugstore deals. I especially love the ability to print a list of the items I specifically need

Sew, Mama, Sew --this is my favorite website for fabric, tutorials, and forums about all things sewing! I love the fabric selection they have, and their tutorials and ideas are always inspiring (you should check out their Handmade Holidays from the past two years--TONS of great projects)

Little Birdie Secrets --this crafty blog is not sewing specific, which I like for those times I need to get out of a sewing rut. Their ideas are often quick and fun, and work especially well for gifts

GirlTalk --by far one of the most convicting blogs/websites that I have seen, Carolyn Mahaney and her three married daughters regularly address issues that Christian women face, pointing them to Christ, Scripture and gospel without fail

20/20 Conference at SEBTS --shameless plug: I worked on the very first 20/20 conference at SEBTS, so I have a special place in my heart for this conference. Though officially it is the 20/20 Collegiate Conference, the topics and themes speak to people of all ages. This past year I ATTENDED portions of the conference for the first time ever (having worked most of them in the past), and I greatly enjoyed it. You should try to attend, or at least listen to some of the past sessions :-)

Last, but not least, two articles that I resonate with:

Editorial on dying --My husband's best friend wrote this recent editorial about Christians and dying, and I found it to be thought-provoking and inspiring. In today's world, we do not want to think about dying, but as Christians we have no reason to fear death! Instead, perhaps we should look at mourning in a different way

Adults reading young adult fiction --Hunter Baker writes about why adults are reading young adult fiction (which just gives validity to my fascination with Harry Potter :-)

What are your favorite links?

Another random week :)

Posted by  | Sunday, August 1, 2010  at 9:41 PM
HI ladies! It is my week to organize posts on POH and I didn’t think of a fabulous topic so I just have several totally unrelated posts planned. I thought that I’d just start by sharing a little more some of my favorite links and resources. I also have posts planned on some of my favorite natural solutions, how to make your own “moby-style” baby wrap, and hopefully one or two more if I can find the time to organize my thoughts. If there is any other topic you would like me to discuss, please let me know! It is a little intimidating to try to think of a whole week’s worth of posts that you will find helpful, so I’d love suggestions :)

Some favorite blogs:

Passionate Homemaking -- this website might have been mentioned before on POH, but I had to write about it again because it is undoubtedly my favorite source for natural solutions and healthy recipes. Be sure and check out her resources page -- she has great links and articles on everything having to do with living a simple and natural lifestyle.

Raising Homemakers -- this is a newer group blog focused on raising godly daughters that I have recently enjoyed. They share recipes, basic “how-to’s,” and other posts encouraging mothers to teach their daughters basic homemaking skills.

Naturally Knocked Up -- I know, the name of this blog is hilarious :) But this blog really has some fabulous information. After our temporary struggle with infertility, I became very aware that what I put into my body directly affects every aspect of my health, including my fertility. Donielle does a great job of explaining why certain foods are bad for fertility and which foods are good for you. She is constantly researching and sharing what she learns, as well as healthy recipes that she tries out.

Heavenly Homemakers -- I get a lot of healthy recipe ideas from this blog, as well as some gardening, educational and parenting ideas.

Keeper of the Home -- another great blog with healthy recipes and encouraging articles on homemaking, organization, parenting, etc

Other Resources:
Doorposts.com -- Lots of parenting resources for all ages! We recently purchased the Catechism for young children set and Karis has really enjoyed going through a few questions each day and looking at the corresponding cartoon pictures. They are currently offering a free “If/Then chart” with any order, which we are also using. It has really helped us to keep our discipline consistent, as well as biblical.

ABC Jesus Loves Me -- I know this has been mentioned on POH already, but I’ve just started using the website and have really appreciated the links. I’m not really “doing” the 3 year old curriculum, but I’m using a lot of the ideas and resources mentioned.

Graham Family Ministries -- More parenting, cooking, and educational resources.

Dealnews.com -- this might seem a little random, but I thought I’d mention it. If you are looking to buy any type of electronics, check here first to find the best deal. I’ve also found great deals on amazon sales, children’s clothing (like Kohl’s and Macy’s), and picture gifts.

Blogs Hollie frequents

Posted by  | Sunday, January 11, 2009  at 10:13 PM
If I'm surfing the web, I'm either emailing, blogging, visiting craft/designer or nutrition websites. I thrive off of inspiration from other craft blogs as well as nutritional advice. Nowadays, I don't have a lot of time to find new ones and surf the net, and I also get "ansy" after a while of sitting on my bum in front of the computer, so I love recommendations and leads. My good friend Shannon, who also loves to look at craft/nutrition, will email me anything she comes across that that helps me find more crafty inspiration.

Here are the blogs/websites I frequent:

Nutrition:
Weston A. Price Foundation
This is where it's at my friends. I LOVE this website, for it's not just recipes, it's mainly articles on nutrition, health, the latest discoveries on things that affect our whole well-being, etc.. I learn so so much from this site.

Passionate Homemaking
Okay, I know that I'm not "supposed" to list "family" blogs that I visit, and technically some of the advice on this blog is "family-oriented" but there are LOTS of nutrition articles and advice. This girl is amazing. She's young and how she learned all of this knowledge at such a young age is unbelievable. It's all about the influence of her family in the years she was home and under their direction, guidance and care. She posts once a day, sometimes twice. This is a blog to which my friend Shannon opened my eyes. She's also a believer and let me just tell you, the Scripture she uses will sharpen and challenge you.

Crafts:
The Angry Chicken
This is a wonderful website for LOTS of inspiration! I have a sewing book by Amy Carol, the author of The Angry Chicken, and I love love love this sewing book. It's called Bend The Rules Sewing. One of my favorite things to check out on The Angry Chicken is the "show and tell" for the Bend The Rules Sewing book. It's a flickr book and people post all of their crafts that they make from her book. It really helps me see color schemes, designs, how people have altered patterns...etc. Not to mention, Amy Carol posts on food, sewing, crafts, and design, and it's all very inspiring.

Craft Leftovers
I don't always check this blog out, but I would do it a lot more if I had a lot more time.

Bella Dia
Another fun one I'd love to chew on more often.

Thrifty Blogs that Leah Reads

Posted by  | Wednesday, January 7, 2009  at 10:36 PM
hHi all! I was actually going to post this yesterday, but after reading Christina's post, I started reading through the Cake Wrecks blog and wasted all of my computer time!! That site is SO funny. I had never seen it before. Thanks for the recommendation, Christina!

I read two money saving blogs on a regular basis that were recommended to me by others. If you haven't checked these out, I would highly recommend it.

Money Saving Mom

The Thrifty Mama

Even if you don't get into all the deal shopping at CVS and Walgreens, etc, there is still plenty of good info coming from these sites. I started shopping the CVS and Walgreens deals about 2 months ago after following these sites for a month. I am really having so much fun with it. I am saving money by doing it, but I think the main reason I do it is because it gives me a sense of accomplishment and a little bit of joy. I find the challenge of getting a good deal a welcome break to the day in and day out of staying at home. Ed usually laughs at how excited I get about getting free toothpaste and mascara. I will say that after two months of shopping the deals from these sites I have all the toothpaste, shampoo, toothbrushes, body washes, pain meds, razors and hand soap that we will need for AT LEAST the next two years. NO JOKE! And I got it all for free! I've bought a few things that I don't use because they helped me buy something that I wanted/needed. I've given those things away to others. Follow these blogs for a few weeks and see if it's something you'd be interested in. It can be so much fun!

Christina's Favorite Reads

This week - we'll have a few posts highlighting some our favorite blogs and/or websites. Feel free to add your recommendations in a comment below! There are SO many good blogs out there for cooking, parenting, crafting, decorating, homemaking and these are just some of my favorites - in no particular order:

Cake Wrecks - She finds pictures (with the help of readers) of badly decorated cakes. The funniest part is her commentary on the pictures. She also does a regular feature, "Sunday Sweets" that highlights some really incredible non-wrecky cakes.

Hostess with the Mostess
- This one has some FABULOUS decorating and entertaining ideas. (Recipes too!) It's a beautiful blog as well. I just love looking at all of the pictures, even if I could never recreate the ideas!

BooMama - This one is a pretty popular blog, so many of you may already read her posts. But I had to include her in this list, just in case you don't. You should! She's hilarious.

Baby Cheapskate - Love this blog for LOTS of great baby deals. She gives a weekly post with any current diaper deals.

Organizing Junkie - This blog gives GREAT inspiration to organize my home. It also gives great ideas for doing so! But maybe I'm the only nerd that gets such pleasure from seeing pictures of organized rooms and closests.

Classy Mommy - This website has a couple of different pages, including a blog. She does product reviews and hosts tons of giveaways. This is the site that hosted the contest I participated in to win a Wii. (Speaking of the Wii - I didn't win, but my husband did get one for Christmas from his parents! :) And I didn't win the Wii, but I did win a $500 gift card to Walmart. No kidding! It PAYS to blog stalk.

Girl Talk - I've talked about this blog before, but it is written by the wife and daughters of CJ Mahaney. They've authored several books (including Shopping for Time from our book club). I am always so encouraged by their posts. They also include a weekly Friday Funny that are hilarious.

Mom of Littles - This is written by the "Money Saving Mom" (Leah's going to mention that blog later this week.) and I just discovered it. It's a great look into the life of a Mom with young children.

Mom Advice - Love this blog and especially her weekly "notebook" entries. She has a post that includes tons of links to other blogs with tons of cute ideas. I've gotten some great ideas from "Amy's Notebook." I've found a lot of great crafty blogs through her notebook.

Deal Seeking Mom - This is one of my favorite "thrify blogs" and it happens to be the one I go to most for my CVS deals.

The Purl Bee - a wonderful crafting blog!
