Bottles and Cribs

Sorry to interrupt the lively discussion of cloth diapers, but I have recently found some very interesting information that I'd like to pass on to our readers! Some websites and blogs that I read include Baby Cheapskate, Freebies 4 Mom and Baby Bargains (written by the authors of the popular Baby Bargains book).

1. Through both Baby Cheapskate and Freebies 4 Mom, I learned about an opportunity at Babies R Us. Many of us have mentioned on Prayer of Hannah the concern with BPA (bisphenol-A) in the plastics used in many bottles and sippy cups. I personally have switched bottles with our second child because of these concerns and try to use sippy cups that are BPA free as well. According to these two websites, Babies R Us is offering store credit for the original price for used bottles containing BPA. You do NOT need a receipt. This is part of an effort to transition to BPA free products, which Babies R Us is carrying more of now. Here is a FAQ from the BRU website about BPA and bottles.

According to BRU website - they are transitioning to BPA only products by the end of 2008! You can do a quick google search to learn more about the dangers of BPA if you are unaware. This is a great opportunity! I plan to head to BRU this afternoon with our old Avent bottles we no longer use. They will also take nipples as well. For a list of bottles that do NOT contain BPA, check this out. Most mainstream bottles (Avent and Dr. Browns) DO contain BPA. We used to use Avent, but now use Playtex Nursers with the drop in liners.

2. Babies R Us has pulled ALL cribs made by Jardine Enterprises and is no longer selling them. There has not been an official recall from the CPSC yet, but they expect one to come soon. The issue is with the side slats coming loose and falling out. I read somewhere it is more of a concern with the cribs that have drop down sides. Our crib is made by Jardine and we have a drop down side. I've commented to Jacob (my husband) several times that I felt like the slats were loose. Because of this announcement (which you can also read about on Babies R Us FAQ site), we will be transitioning Will to his toddler bed tonight. We can still put the baby in her bassinet for a few more pounds at least. Check out the baby bargains blog for more information.

I hope this information is useful to you! Please post any additional info you might find on these topics! Now back to our regularly scheduled program - diapers! :)

Not all BRU are doing this though! I've yet to call the one in Raleigh (I am about to here in a little bit as we'll be on "that side" of town tomorrow)

I know on BC that's been the BIG discussion. Since it is NOT a recall, each store is on it's own to decide if they want to accept these bottles and how (w/ or w/o a receipt, new/used, w/ or w/o packaging, etc...)

Good point, Terra! I have heard that BRU in Raleigh is doing it and I'm heading there this afternoon (to return other things and our bottles) so I'll let you all know if they accept them.

So this might be a stupid question, but will BRU take back bottles that might not have come from there? We have already received SEVERAL Dr. Browns plastic bottles (we registered for glass, but oh well...) and I don't know where they came from. I am interested to know if BRU in Raleigh is receiving the bottles though as that is where I will head tomorrow.

Thanks, Christina for this info!!!

How'd it go at BRU Christina?? :)

Success! The Babies R Us in Raleigh took all of our bottles both Avent and Ventaire-about 10 total). I think I got around $60 (I returned some other things as well). They did not need a receipt. They will take bottles back bought from anywhere. They simply had a sheet with codes and prices of the different bottles. (I've always returned stuff to BRU even if I wasn't sure it was bought there. They have a GREAT return policy!)

Were your bottles all new and in their packages, or were some of them used? Just curious as to how generous BRU is!

All of our bottles were used! They will take new or used, with or without a receipt!

Wow, I'm really impressed with this! I can't wait to see if our BRU is doing the same thing. Applause for BRU!!!

Back from the Raleigh BRU - success! :) They even let me return a couple that were missing pieces (woohoo!) I got about $50 in store credit :) I hadn't completely thought through the process and hadn't researched what I wanted to get yet, so we bought a 2 pack of the born free bottles (since Keaton's only bottle of the day is at bedtime now)

I did ask about sippys/utensils and she said they would take them if they were on the "bad" list. We'll be back out that way tomorrow, so I'm about to look up our cups & plastic-ware :)

Just had to share my joy! ;-)
